This Must Be The Place

Great Book by Anna Winger, a graduate from Columbia University. It is not a national bestseller and I got it on sale at Borders but definitely an eye opening about the German history. I had mistaken it as a love story but it was more about two individuals who came from a different background. They build a friendship between them, regardless the religion differences. It was a story about a German man, Walter who was conceived by an American Jew mother and a German father and a new york city teacher, Hope (Jew by default because of her Husband). Walter was the famous voice of Tom Cruise in Germany, where he dubbed all Tom Cruise's movies. Hope moved to Germany with her husband after she lost a baby.

Even though the book is a story about two individuals who are living in the present, the author actually focused more on the cultural differences and the history of Germany. It was A story about the Fall of the Berlin Wall, the emotions and thoughts about the germans regarding hitler and the wall, post-war experiences, and the connection with the Jews. the book also mentioned about the differences in cultural habits, as insignificant as how French, British, Germans and Americans make their beds to the native language of each country that had actually shaped their facial expressions.

I enjoyed the book but I wish it was a happy ending, like there was a conclusion about the relationship between Walter and Hope. From my own opinion, Walter and Hope remained closed friends but nothing more.
